Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy is a 2-year course that offers advanced training in the area of renewable and sustainable energy systems, sustainable energy policy and development, climate change adaptation and resilience, energy efficiency, and carbon management.
Overview
This course provides students with the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and skills in renewable and sustainable energy. The first year of the course is the Graduate Diploma in Energy and Carbon Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment. In the second year, students will complete either a capstone unit in renewable energy and sustainable energy development or a research dissertation in any of the areas mentioned above.
Admission Requirements
- Enrolment restrictions: All graduate courses are subject to restriction.
- Special requirements: This course is available to online students anywhere in the world who wish to study off-campus by using online facilities. Assistance is provided by tutors who correspond with students by telephone, email, or the Internet.
- Entry requirements (onshore): Recognised Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) or higher, or equivalent training, or professional experience in a related area. Students may be eligible for advanced standing in the Masters if they have achieved AQF Level 8 in a recognised, cognate discipline.
- English language requirements: Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify and critically appraise current developments in renewable energy systems and advanced energy storage technologies, demonstrating proficiency in consideration of technical, economic, and policy factors.
- Identify and assess the criteria for net-zero energy development in both developed and developing countries.
- Interpret and apply specialized principles of sustainability planning, management, and leadership to scenarios and problems in renewable and sustainable energy.
- Evaluate and apply best practice approaches to create sustainable smart cities and develop skills to assist in the decarbonization of cities.
- Produce techno-economic appraisals of renewable energy and diverse energy storage technologies.
- Identify, analyze, and demonstrate the interactions between energy and carbon management plans for commercial and industrial buildings utilizing industry standards and rating tools.
- Interpret data collected from renewable energy resource assessments to select appropriate renewable energy technologies for a site.
- Execute a substantial research project by using the research principles and fundamentals in renewable and sustainable energy, and broader aspects of climate change management.
- Apply well-developed ethical and professional behavior to broad areas of energy and sustainability.

Professional Outcomes
Students who complete the unit PEN590 Energy Systems as part of this course are eligible for provisional accreditation by the Clean Energy Council for design of stand-alone photovoltaic systems, small wind power systems, and micro hydro power systems. Students who complete the units PEN628 are eligible to apply to become an Infrastructure Australia Accredited Professional.
